Morocco may seem a very unexpected source of tanks for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, the decision to transfer this heavy equipment was made back in April 2022.
According to media reports, the first 20 vehicles have already reached the battlefields in Ukraine. Before their arrival, the T-72Bs were restored to operational condition and upgraded in the Czech Republic. The total number of units transferred is not disclosed.
The Moroccan Army initiated the transfer at the request of the United States. These Soviet-made T-72B tanks were originally purchased from Belarus in 1999-2000.
In total, Morocco had about 148 units of T-72B and T-72BK in its military reserves. However, not all of them were in active service. The Czech company Excalibur Army has been providing tank technical maintenance services to Morocco, but later the entire batch was “redirected” to Ukraine.
