Ukrainian soldiers took down a Russian drone Eleron-3SV. It is used by the Russians for reconnaissance, adjusting artillery tasks, and other aerial surveillance. This is an expensive and highly valuable weapon that causes a lot of headaches for Ukrainian defenders.
Ukraine plans to take the Eleron-3SV drone apart and thoroughly examine it.
Bild journalist Julian Repke said that the video shows the Eleron-3SV drone, which is worth around 150,000 euros. It is produced by the Russian company ENIKS, located in Kazan. The Russian military uses it for reconnaissance, as well as for adjusting artillery fire and other tasks. It is not a combat drone, but it helps the Russians in combat missions.

The Eleron-3 has been produced since 2013, even though it was unveiled several years earlier as a brother to a larger Eleron-10 drone. It is a rather new drone in the Russian fleet. It is reported that Eleron-3 drones were rarely used in the early stages of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, but that changed later on. Due to its GLONASS and GPS capabilities, Eleron-3 became a real problem for the defenders of Ukraine.
The Eleron-3SV has the scheme of a flying wing – it has a conventional aircraft fuselage, but with delta wings, and a tailplane. It is launched using a special catapult and lands using a parachute system. Eleron-3SV has an electric motor, and a gyroscopically stabilized mount for cameras and sensors. It can carry various radio equipment, jammers, and other things, it can even see in the dark using its thermal imaging and night vision capabilities. One ground station can control up to two drones.
Characteristics of the Eleron-3SV drone:
- Length: 635 cm;
- Wingspan: 1.47 m;
- Maximum take-off weight: 3.5 kg;
- Maximum load weight: up to 0.5 kg;.
- Velocity: 70-130 kph;
- Flight duration: up to 2 hours;
- Flight ceiling: up to 3-5 km;
- Communication distance with the operator: up to 25 km;
- Offline range: up to 50 km.
Ukraine rarely manages to shoot down such drones, but in October, Ukrainian troops seized an Eleron-3 using an EDM4S Sky Wiper anti-drone jamming gun. And in August, the armed forces of Ukraine took down the Eleron T28ME for the first time. It is another modification of Eleron-3 with increased flight ceiling and range.
Both sides in this war are using drones extensively, which gives us a peek into how the future of warfare looks. Small surveillance drones are unbelievably important in finding and identifying targets in overgrown terrain. They can also correct artillery fire and even drop small munitions on unsuspecting enemy troops. Hopefully, Ukrainian specialists can learn a lot from the Eleron-3SV drone that they’ve captured.
